Q. What is Mandibular Advancement??

A. This term refers to the forward movement of the lower jaw (mandible). The Noiselezz and SomnoGuard are both Mandibular Advancement devices. When worn correctly, a Mandibular Advancement device holds the mandible (lower Jaw) slightly advanced from its normal position. This opens the airway and keeps the tongue from touching the soft tissue at the back of the throat. Also, while the tongue is being held forward, it becomes more stiff. This combination of events stops the snoring noise and helps with Sleep Apnea. Click here to learn the differences between the Noiselezz and SomnoGuard.

Q. What treatment is the best for me?

A. There are very many treatments out there and we think that some of them will work for some people some of the time. Of all treatments available, we have found that ®Noiselezz and ®SomnoGuard are the most effective, painless, economical, simple, easy to use, comfortable, and transportable.

Q. Which mandibular advancement appliance is best for me?

A. Please read this entire FAQ. It contains good ideas collected from many, many conversations with snoring sufferers. The ®Noiselezz and ®SomnoGuard are the two best appliances considering effectiveness, price, comfort, availability, portability and ease-of-use. Chances are better than 92% that one or both of these appliances will treat your snoring. We sell them both because there are some very interesting and viable differences, for example—the ®SomnoGuard is possibly more suited to a closed-mouth sleeper and the ®Noiselezz for an open-mouthed sleeper. If you have a severe overbite or underbite, you could try the ®SomnoGuard AP with its wide range of adjustment. The ®SomnoGuard is custom-fitted while the ®Noiselezz is not. The ®Noiselezz is a hinged two-piece unit, the ®SomnoGuard is one piece. You are the only one that can decide which is best for you. Read on for more detail.

Q. Can these appliances be worn if I have dentures?

A. Yes with Noiselezz, as fitting is not usually required. Yes with ®SomnoGuard— however, you must follow the special fitting instructions enclosed with the appliance. Your dentures must be a tight fit and of course you must wear the dentures at night with either appliance. You must follow the hints in the letter accompanying your appliance. Fitting with dentures carries a risk which is yours alone.

Q. Can these appliances fit a person with severe overbite or underbite?

A. The ®Noiselezz, as the advancement is preset, may not be suitable for those with a severe overbite or underbite. The ®SomnoGuard Classic and SomnoGuard 2.0 have a small adjustment choice, but may still not be suitable. The ®SomnoGuard AP has a large range of advancement and may be fitted to someone with severe overbite or underbite.

Q. Who should not use Mandibular Advancement Devices?

A. 1) Youths whose teeth have not settled as yet.
    2) Anyone susceptible to “TMJ” (Templar Mandibular Joint disorder). Any MAD (Mandibular Advancement Device) will advance the mandible (move the jaw forward slightly), and in some people, this may put a strain on the Mandible Joint.

Q. What are the indications, contraindications, and possible side effects of mandibular advancement devices?

A.
Indications
(conditions that are treated by a mandibular advancement device):

The use of a mandibular advancement device will result in a more comfortable, healthy sleep for you and your family.

Contraindications (If you have any of the following conditions, see a medical professional before using this appliance)

Patients with sleep apnea should be able to extend their lower jaw forward at least 7 mm. If the patient’s dental condition appears uncertain and in case of occlusional abnormalities (e.g. crossbite, overbite, underbite) a dental checkup is strongly recommended before treatment. If the device is used for the long term, regular visits with a dentist are required.

Possible side effects:

In case of any persisting or severe side effects, stop using the appliance immediately and consult your medical professional.

Q. Does the ®Noiselezz usually require fitting?

A. No, not for a reasonably normal shaped mouth. It can be easily adjusted if there is any discomfort. The advancement is preset and the appliance is a two piece unit, consisting of two hollow opposed trays. These are joined by unique small special plastic hinges which act as springs, allowing the appliance to follow the mouth as it opens. Most snorers sleep with theirs mouth open. The Noiselezz may not be suitable for those with a severe overbite or underbite. In this case, the ®SomnoGuard AP, with a wide range of adjustment, may be the proper choice.

Q. Why does the ®SomnoGuard require fitting?

A. The ®SomnoGuard has trays filled with a special copolymer. This filler becomes moldable at a certain temperature, while the supporting trays do not soften. This ability allows a custom fit to the individual’s teeth (both upper and lower) and some choice in the degree of advancement. ®SomnoGuard is a one piece appliance with a unique front opening for breathing. It works well for unusual shaped tooth structures and/or closed-mouth sleepers. ®The SomnoGuard Classic and 2.0 may not be suitable for those with a severe overbite or underbite. In this case, the ®SomnoGuard AP, with a wide range of adjustment, may be the proper choice.

Q. What is the SomnoGuard Classic?

A. The SomnoGuard Classic refers to the original SomnoGuard appliance.

Q. How does the SomnoGuard Classic differ from SomnoGuard 2.0?

A. The SomnoGuard classic and virtually all mandibular advancement devices utilize the front upper and lower teeth to hold the mandible (lower jaw) in an advanced position, with some distribution to the molars. The 2.0 increases considerably the probability that this required force is more evenly distributed to all the teeth.

Q. Is the SomnoGuard 2.0 more difficult to fit?

A. The 2.0 version is thicker in the molar area, thereby requiring some more fitting expertise and steps. This is not difficult but as with the classic SomnoGuard, the Download Fitting Instructions MUST be followed exactly and very carefully.

Q. Is the SomnoGuard AP suitable for everyone?

A. This appliance is suitable for almost everyone, and is probably a godsend because the advancement is adjustable. This is a technological breakthrough in mandibular advancement. Yes, you can easily fit the AP yourself. It has separate upper and lower trays that are moulded individually for a tighter fit. There is also an adjusting screw which provides a greater and more infinite precise degree of advancement. Again, full written Download Fitting Instructions are provided. Note: If you have an extra-large or extra-small bite, no standard appliance may fit you. In this case, you should contact a dentist for a custom made appliance.

Q. Are the ®Noiselezz and ®SomnoGuard available in different sizes?

A. No, both appliances are available in a "one-size-fits-all" format. Oral appliances can only economically be manufactured in one size—the size that fits the largest segment of the population. There is a chance they may not fit a larger or smaller person. Obviously, you have a small risk when ordering either of these appliances. We are unable to test for size, but our standard 50% warranty applies when the appliance is returned.

Q. Does "one-size-fits-all" mean the appliance will fit everyone?

A. Our Noiselezz ansd SomnoGuard appliances are made to fit the largest segment of human population. This includes people with a normal bite, a large bite, or a small bite. However, if you have an extra-large or extra-small bite, no standard appliance may fit you. For example, if you have ever needed an impression taken of your teeth, and your dentist has to get a seldom-used tray to take the impression, then it is likely that no “one-size-fits-all” appliance will fit your tooth shape. Obviously, you have a small risk when ordering these appliances. We are unable to test for size, but our standard 50% warranty applies when the appliance is returned.

Q. Does basic mouth/teeth shape indicate possible fitting problems?

A. Yes. The most difficult types to fit are the severe-overbite and the severe-underbite shaped mouths. The SomnoGuard AP, the latest design innovation, has resolved this fitting problem. The new appliance has a screw-adjuster to set the degree of lower jaw advancement. Also, a very small or very large person may have trouble with fitting. In these cases, a dental professional may be able to trim off some material to provide a good fit.

Q. What does the SomnoGuard fitting video contain?

A. The ®SomnoGuard video contains instructions and suggestions for fitting. The online link is available with the purchase of a ®SomnoGuard appliance. Detailed printed Download Fitting Instructions are still enclosed with SomnoGuard. This video is compatible with most operating systems.

Q. Should a medical practitioner be consulted before wearing a mandibular advancement device?

A. Most certainly we recommend this action. In the first place, you must have a healthy tooth structure in order to wear any mandibular advancement appliance. It is recommended that you consult your dental practitioner for this advice and for fitting if and when required. Fitting is always required with the ®SomnoGuard. Detailed use and Download Fitting Instructions are included with both appliances. Fitting is not difficult but it is your responsibility.

Q. If I call your toll-free number, can you pick one device for me?

Q. Should I try mandibular advancement with braces or retainers?

A. Mandibular advancement devices use some or all of the teeth to hold the jaw forward, and support it in a position that keeps the airway open and the tongue off the soft tissues at the back of the throat. Knowing this, we think it is usually not advisable for people that use braces or retainers. By all means ask your dentist.

The SomnoGuard Classic and 2.0 are supplied with additional molding material so you can increase contact where needed. The SomnoGuard 2.0 is specifically designed for more molar contact. Remember each of these appliances has other important qualities that differentiate one from the others, so it is advisable to read all the information. Contact is not the only important feature.

Q. How do your appliances, Noiselezz and SomnoGuard, differ from sports mouthguards?

A. The sole purpose of a sports mouthguard is to guard the teeth. The Noiselezz and SomnoGuard are products of extensive scientific research and testing...precisely designed to advance the lower jaw (mandible) in a specific manner to relieve snoring. These appliances also treat bruxing (tooth grinding) and are to be worn only while sleeping.
